Not surprisingly, the idea of flying straight into a hurricane didn’t have much support in the beginning. Go figure, right? The armed forces have a history of bravery, and the first (intentional) hurricane hunters came from the British military during WW2. In 1943 a surprise hurricane hit the Texas coast. British pilots were training at the time at Bryan Field. When the hurricane hit, American soldiers started evacuating because they didn’t trust the reliability of their aircraft. British Major Casey Hamilton, a lead instructor at the field, proved them wrong by flying with another trainer right into the eye of the storm. They returned safely. They were the first hurricane hunters.

Hurricane hunters are highly skilled pilots. They come from the Air Force Reserve and are known as the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Association. Since 1944, they have been the only Department of Defense organizations still flying into hurricanes, cyclones and tropical storms. People involved include the pilots, of course, but also a vast support group of navigators, weather loadmasters and a dedicated ground crew.

The organization can investigate up to three storms at once and operates 24 hours/day. At the beginning of a storm, the crew will fly between 500-1,500 feet above the ocean’s surface. One of their main tasks is to determine which way the wind is blowing. They also study the ocean waves to pinpoint wind speed and direction.
For stronger hurricanes (Category 3 and above), hurricane hunters enter the storm at 10,000 feet. They are able to understand the hurricane’s eye better, including the lowest surface pressure. Home Electricity – What are Hurricane Hunters?
