Save Energy During Winter – Electricity Express

How to Save Energy During Winter

The question “How do you save energy during winter?” sounds unimportant to many Texans.  After all, we live in a state where it can snow on Christmas and then the next day, we’re playing golf in our shorts.  Winter and electricity conservation seems like an issue for our fellow Americans living in Alaska or Maine.  But we all remember the cold snap of last winter.  No matter how bizarre Texas weather may be, freezing temperatures will come.  #electricityexpress has some tips on energy conservation during the coming winter months.

Payless electricity these winter ideas

  1. Check your home for draftsWindows and doors are the most likely offenders.  Caulk to keep heat inside the house where it belongs.
  2. Examine your windows.  Remember when your son was playing basketball and the ball hit the window, leaving a nice crack?  Now’s the time to fix it.
  3. Clean up your yard.  Get rid of any dead trees, and trim back branches that are too close to your house or power lines.  Some of the younger trees in the Plano/North Dallas area, in particular, are vulnerable when freezing temperatures arrive.
  4. Replace older thermostats.  More modern thermostats that can be programmed will help you save energy.
  5. Learn how to turn off your water valves: Waiting until your pipes burst to understand how to shut off the water is not a good idea.
  6. Double-check your roof.  Make sure the roof is structurally sound.  Snow or water that accumulates on top of your roof can cause problems.
  7. Prepare your heater for the coming weather.  Your heater has been sitting around doing nothing since last winter.  Have it cleaned and inspected to make sure it’s in good working condition.

Old Man Winter is coming.  The key to saving energy during the winter is to start preparations now.  Remember to have a two-step strategy:

  • Look around outside of your home – prepare both the outside of your house as well as your yard.
  • Look inside of your home – be sure that heat stays inside your home and the cold air remains outside.  Any heating equipment must be in good working order also.
