How to Save Energy

Honestly, it’s not that hard; it’s just a matter of paying attention to details. Trust me that small details count. Every kilowatt you save and keep saving energy will be reflected on your bill.

Here are some suggestions on how to lower your electric bill and save on energy:

Take cooler showers. Longer hot showers mean that your water heater works that much harder. The water from outside comes colder because of this winter’s temperatures. The water heater uses more energy to keep that cold water warm and cozy whenever you need it. If possible, replace your water heater with an “on-demand water heater”, a very good option at LOWES, Lowes always has ways to make your home more energy-efficient so you save on your electric bills.

Check your home insulation. A lot can be done here, even if you live in an apartment. The home insulation issue is more than just attics or fancy double-glass windows. Insulation is for all cracks where cold air might leak into your home. We previously talked about the “dual draft guard”, a very inexpensive way to stop cold air from coming into the house from underneath the front or back door. Another idea I have tried is an aluminum/vinyl door weatherstrip, very inexpensive and for my door, it works much better.

Here are more tips for how to seal air leaks.

Reverse your ceiling fans. Switch the ceiling fans to blow the air upward. The warm air then stays up, keeping all air warm and the heater turns on fewer times throughout the day. Remember not to turn off the heater, just keep it at a comfortable 69 – 70 degrees, and remember that 2 degrees may affect 15% of your electric bill.

Use prepaid electricity service. Even if you live in a 5,000 sq ft home, you can really save money on energy. Start with prepaid electricity service, and you’ll get some great benefits:

  • Daily usage notifications. Yes, this is by far the best way to save money on energy. When you see how many kilowatts and how much money you are spending on a daily basis, you see what things you can do better to improve your energy savings. Let me ask you this: will you do all your home’s energy-efficiency improvements on the same day? Probably not. With a monthly bill, it’s difficult to see how those home improvement efforts are affecting your energy usage. When you live in a small apartment and use less than 500 kilowatts, your kilowatt rate will increase. With prepaid service, the increase is less dramatic. It’s also very easy to count the kilowatt usage.

After a few months with prepaid electricity, you change your energy usage habits because you know you can save.
