How does e-waste affect my health?
The Do Something.org page published a list of 11 fun facts about e-waste. Here we share some of them:
- 85% of electronic waste was disposed of in landfills or incinerators. The toxins that these electronic waste give off travel through the air. This means that sooner or later, humans breathe these toxins.
- E-waste represents 2% of the garbage disposed of in landfills in the United States, but it is equal to 70% of toxic waste. The excessive amount of lead in electronic waste causes damage to our central nervous system, our blood and our kidneys.
- Between 20 and 50 million tons of electronic waste is disposed of in the world each year.
- Cell phones and some other electronic devices contain precious metals like gold, silver, and copper. In the United States, cell phones totalling more than $ 60 million in gold and silver are thrown away annually.
