Hurricane season is the beginning of dangerous and unpredictable weather changes for us. Just mention Katrina and we all think of images of a flooded New Orleans and people trapped on the roofs of their homes. 1. Non-perishable foods: Forget foods that can go bad, instead, buy canned. Check the expiration dates and don’t forget to include a manual, non-electric can opener. Make sure you have food for everyone in your family for at least a week.
2. Food for your pets: Include your dishes, too.
3. Cutlery and plates: Include forks, knives and spoons. It is up to you if you prefer disposables or those for daily use, but it is likely that there will not be water to wash them for a while, so it is more advisable to carry disposables. Remember to put them in a trash can.
4. Baby supplies: If there are babies in the family, make plenty of diapers, wipes, powdered milk, and canned baby food.
5. Gasoline in the car: Although this is never a bad idea, keeping your car’s tank at least half full, this time of year is very convenient. The queues to fill gas tanks while there is a hurricane are endless.
6. Flashlights and batteries: It is very difficult to do anything if it is impossible to see in the first place. Bring head and hand torches. Remember to also bring the indicated batteries for each one and at least two battery packs for each flashlight.
7. Large cooler: Store all your supplies in a plastic cooler, not cardboard, as water can break in seconds.
8. Extra cell phones and chargers: Put your groceries near a commercial establishment and put your cell phones to charge next to your groceries. If they have to run, they will have everything in one place. Remember that in an emergency, it is better to SEND TEXT MESSAGES than to call.
   Medicines: Pharmacies will be closed when danger arrives, so do not go out without prescription or prescription medicine.
9. Cash: Credit or debit cards may not work for days due to network failures, and let’s not forget the banks. Always carry cash in case you need a gasoline, more food, clothes or pay for several nights in a hotel.
10. Printed map: If the GPS doesn’t work, how will you find your route? The best way to do this is with a printed map.
