I need help. Why do I have a Switch Hold on the Meter?
I can’t connect my electricity because I have a lock on the meter.
This is one of the most confusing situations that can happen to any person when we are looking to connect electricity. And the worst thing is when they tell you about something that you have never heard in your life. A “lock on the meter” or “switch hold”. Sorry but what is that? And how did it get there? I was already a few days away from moving to my new apartment, and as is normal, you have to do a thousand things, including connecting all the utilities and one of those the electricity.
For me and for everyone, electricity is one of the utilities that cannot wait since it is essential for everyone. Apparently, everything was fine and I placed my electricity order. Shortly after, I receive a call with the news that my address has a “lock on the meter” (switch hold) and they would not be able to connect my electricity until I resolved that.
Why do I have a lock on the meter?
It is a very good question, I feel like the Chapulín Colorado, and now who can help me? I didn’t know where to start, but my electricity company, Electricity Express, explained to me in great detail that there are two reasons why companies put locks on electricity meters.
Because there was a balance to pay with the electricity company. The person who used to live where I am now going to live left a debt.
The other reason is that perhaps the meter could have been “tampered with”. What is tampered with? It is difficult to understand all this in the electricity industry. But hey, when they say that the meter is altered they mean; that it was hit or they wanted to move it so they could change the kilowatt reading. In this way, the electricity bill can be cheaper.
What we electricity consumers don’t know is that today’s meters are smart. That means that any damage or hit that a smart meter receives will send a signal to the utility company and that will cause them to put a padlock and it will be blocked. The best way to fix this type of situation is to get very good advice. A good electricity company will be able to guide you in removing the lock on your meter.
How to remove the Meter Lock?
- If you are responsible for the debt with the electricity company, it will make you pay off the debt.
- If you are a new resident at that address. You will have to fill out and send some documents (appendix J2 and the letter from the landlord that says that you are a new resident). These documents are to prove that you are a new tenant and have nothing to do with the person who lived there before.
From the moment the utility receives these documents, the lock will be removed in 1-2 days.
Who can help me remove the lock from the meter?
Only you can fill out those documents and send them. You must act quickly, ask your landlord for the letter immediately, and check that you are a new resident in that place with your lease. If it is possible to remove the switch hold in 24 hours but you have to act quickly.
