Save Electricity with Home Automation

Nowadays, home automation is getting more popular. It’s not only for comfort, but we can also save electricity with home automation.

Save Electricity with Home Automation. What is home automation?

“Home automation” refers to the automatic and electronic control of household features, activity, and appliances. In simple terms, it means you can easily control the utilities and features of your home via the Internet to make life more convenient and secure and even spend less on household bills.

Invest to Save

Personally, I don’t like the “voice command” gadgets like ALEXA. I don’t know if I want Amazon or Google to know everything I’m doing or wanting. However, we don’t really need to have this kind of voice command gadget to manage our appliances. We can manage all our electronic devices and appliances through our smartphone or PC via Wi-Fi.

The Investment to Save Electricity with Home Automation

Yes, there will be some investment. Outlets, security, thermostats, applications, and more must be connected to the Wi-Fi and to an application downloaded to your smartphone. With that said, the outlets must be changed to smart outlets and the thermostat needs to have Wi-Fi capabilities. While a regular outlet may cost you less than a dollar, a smart outlet can go as low as $23. A programable thermostat can go as low as $69. A new thermostat with Wi-Fi capabilities can start from $129. A home security system can cost you about $49 per month.

If you can see, the investment can be substantial. However, the upgrade to your home is quite significant.

Save Electricity Controlling all that is Connected

Going back to our subject, now that all is connected to the HUB, you can program the smart outlets when to be “hot” and when not. Remember we have a lot of “vampire appliances” (learn more about vampire appliances) that don’t need to be plugged into the wall. But why unplug them, just tell the outlet to stop running power. Better programming when your exterior lights and sprinklers are in use.

Smart Thermostats

I would like to emphasize that our heating and cooling systems are the ones that suck more electricity than any other. With that said, the new thermostats can learn your activities, when everyone is at home when the house is empty, and so on. Now, what they do is that when no one is at home, the house does not need to be cool or warm as if the whole family is at home. It lowers or raises the temperature so the system is not working as many times as if the house is occupied. When it’s almost time for everyone to come back from work, school, or whatever, the thermostat slowly turns the temperature to everyone’s comfort by the time everyone is back home.

How to See Our Electricity Savings?

The best way to understand how our appliances are behaving and make them work efficiently to save electricity is by knowing how much energy they use every day. With that said, the only way to see the electricity usage in our home is with daily meter readings. Now, not every electricity company can give you daily electricity readings. The best way to get this is with prepaid electricity. Prepaid electricity will send a daily notification via email or text with the amount of energy used. Then, with that information, you can modify the time and the way you use your appliances and see what their best performance is.
