Here is what happens when we called all our competition, we secretly shopped them. We try to figure out why some of our customers did not connect their electricity services with us since we think we have the best deals. There are a lot of gimmicks and hooks out there, and customers are getting fooled. Offer: Very friendly attitude, willing to help me even without credit, offered a 12-month plan at 7.9 cents kWh.

Deposit: One-time $150 deposit (nonrefundable).

Trick: No base fee and no usage fee. 7.9 cents is fixed for only 3 months, after that goes to a variable rate.

Truth: Utility charges a usage fee, the rate is not fixed for the length of the contract. No same-day services.

Champion Energy

Offer: 12-month plan at 5.2 cents as energy charge which is not the total that the customer will pay, if using more than 2000 kWh the energy charge goes up to 9.1 cents.

Deposit: A) One-time $350 refundable or B) one-time $150 nonrefundable.

Trick: They JUST quote ENERGY CHARGE, which does not include energy surcharges. No cancellation fees.

Truth: 5.2 cents is not the total that I will pay for my kWh rate, the agent did not explain to me the TDSP charges, these charges are about 3.5 – 4.9 cents per kWh; whereas the total will be over 10 – 14 cents per kWh.  If the deposit will be waived with a good conduct letter, the service will be connected in 48 hours.

Green Mountain Energy

Offer: Must have good credit, subsequently I need a good social security number to be able to call to sign up (isn’t this racist?). Although I told the representative I don’t have a social security number, she continues selling me a plan (we both were confused). No same-day service.

Deposit: ??? this is the confusion, the representative asked me for a $179 deposit, however, I can’t get the service because I don’t provide credit.

Our difference:
