Where in the House to Save Energy

We continue with the next step, as I explained in previous blogs, we learned how to read our electricity bill and see how much kWh is consumed at home. Now, if you use more kWh than average, it’s time to make changes in your home, not only you but your whole family, everybody can participate and see how big the impact is on your energy usage. Residential Electricity (4) is about where to find savings.

  • Lighting: Use natural light to the maximum during the day and avoid the use of light bulbs in sunlit rooms. Change all light bulbs with high efficient/low energy consumption ones, they consume four times less energy, and last longer, and remember to turn them off if you’re not in the room.
  • Appliances: Disconnect everything that is not in use, television, stereo, radio, cell phone chargers, blenders, microwaves, etc. In the end, avoid leaving appliances on standby, it means, eliminating the “ghost consumption” at home which is about 54% of the average consumption.
  • Refrigerator: It is important to place it with at least 5 cm spaces between other furniture to allow air circulation. Install them away from direct sunlight, stove, water heater or other heat sources. We must also ensure that the doors close tightly and do not let out any cold air.
  • Washer and dryer: Try to fill it with the amount of clothing as suggested (MAX LOAD), because if you put less clothing you will waste more water and electricity. It is also good to use cold or warm water to wash. Do it at night time as the house is cooler and the outside temperature is not so hot. In winter time wash and dry at night too because the dryer produces heat and keeps the house a little warmer.
  • Air conditioning: This is very important and if you do not use it the right way you may spend a lot of energy in your home. First of all, turn the A / C actually when necessary, if the temperature is nice you can open your windows or turn on the ceiling fans, which will keep your house cool and use less energy. If necessary, turn them on and put it to a normal temperature and 75-78 if you have to leave home to work or out for more than 5 hours, the best advice is to not turn it off, do not turn up the thermostat above 82 so the A/C run as little as possible during your absence, but do not shut down the machine completely. If you turn it ON/OFF daily you will consume too many kWh, remember not to lower the temperature below 70 this also would force the machine to kick in more times and spend more energy. Remember to change the A/C filters, follow me on this one, is very important, you can find them at Home Depot at a good price. Not only can you save on your energy if not avoid allergies from dust.
  • Heater: This is important as well, as the air conditioning, if you use it wrong it can cost you an arm and a leg too, lol. Like the A / C, if it is not necessary to turn it off if the temperature is not cold, just wear a comfortable sweater while at home and if you have to turn it on, set the thermostat at a normal temperature of 78-80, if you have to leave home to work or out for more than 5 hours, the best advice is to not turn it off, do not lower the temperature below 70, do not shut it off during your absence, the machine is not to shut down completely. If you turn it off/on daily this will consume too many kWh, remember not to raise the temperature above 84 as this will consume more kWh.
  • Ceiling fans: Keep them on at medium/low speed. These help circulate the cold or hot air, this will make the A / C or heater run less often and for shorter periods. Note that there is a switch to change the fan rotation direction, WINTER; change direction to make the fan push air into the ceiling and in the summer push air towards the floor.
