Generators – Save Energy

To save energy at home. Should you buy a generator in case there’s a power outage?

A loss of power in Texas normally passes without much fanfare.  Our electrical system is so advanced that many outages are over as soon as they start.  Most fall somewhere in the middle, with the disruption being a minor annoyance.  Even so, there are several good reasons to consider investing in one, including:

  • Save the food – Really, who wants to throw away a gallon of perfectly good ice cream?  It’s true that you can conserve a freezer/refrigerator’s temperature by not opening its doors, but this protection only lasts 4 hours at most.
  • Cold showers – Enough said.
  • issues with the dark – I admit it, I’m one of them.  Put me alone in a house with no power and only candles to light the way, and I start having visions of Freddy and Jason.  For those of you with no such problems, do you know where your flashlight is right now?
  • Texas weather 90% of the year – If you enjoy sweating through 100-degree weather with no air conditioning, then by all means, don’t get a generator.  The rest of us are already lining up to buy one.
  • Texas weather 10% of the year, if we’re lucky – Snow and freezing temperatures do come, thankfully.  I may be a winter girl, but even I prefer central heating oversleeping under ten blankets.  I spent last winter in Guatemala in the highlands with no heat, and I can tell you, you miss what you don’t have.
  • The reality of global warming – The incidence of storms has been predicted to increase over the coming years.  This raises the chance of power disruption.

To save electricity. What brand of generator should you buy?

Just like everything else in America, you’ve got a lot of choices.  Shop around and take your time.  Do your research and ask plenty of questions.  One brand that comes up a lot is Generac.  They sell generators for both the home and business as well as other products.  In a future post, we’ll look a little closer at them and see what makes Generac, well, Generac.
